Why you should make the switch to reusable bags

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the importance of making changes to use of disposable products has been flung to the forefront of societies psyche. The fear of climate change and global warning floods headlines, articles and blogs. It has affected the end user directly in a myriad of ways, through a hard push on recycling and for the blog’s namesake, the tax on plastic bags. Due to this, there was a gap in the market. This led to a surge in popularity of reusable bags. However it isn’t all doom and gloom, there is a Brightside. This allowed for an almost cultural surge in the tote and woven bags for the in circulation. In this blog, I will be outlining why you should be making the switch to reusable bags.

It’s better for the environment:

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Studies show that it can take anywhere from 15 to 100 years for a plastic bag to fully decompose. Not only is it an eyesore, looking unkempt and unclean. It also has an effect on the wildlife. Domestic animals such as birds and fish are affected, however, it does, in fact, have more of a global impact on animals further afield such as sea turtles and seals have gone on record ingesting plastic bags and other litter. Countless animals have died due to this. A relevant example of this is the dubbed “the great Pacific garbage patch”. A vast amalgamation of discarded plastics forming a huge mass, with an estimated size of 700,000 square feet in size, for context that’s roughly the size of Texas.

It’s an advertisement you can wear:

One of the huge benefits of reusable bags is that they are able to be printed upon. They allow you to reflect a brand or message in a transportable form. A vast amount of supermarkets have cottoned on (pardon the pun) to this trend and all similarly launched a “bag for life” campaign, this ranges from the tougher plastic bags made from high-density polyethylene or HDPE, which was used to supplement the weaker and flimsier bags, encouraging more frequent use. A better and more durable alternative to this would be a tote bag. The tote being far more durable in its composition. This led to supermarkets adopting more durable, woven bags for life. These were often printed with floral or eco-friendly themed slogans such as “bag for life” or “no time for waste”. This is a great means of promoting a brand or message centred to an eco-conscious audience. Why not apply it to your own marketing campaign.

It’s versatile:

The application of the reusable bag is so broad. It is not strictly limited to shopping purposes. With it being made of a rugged and durable material in combination, with it being an extension of reflecting of an individual’s personality, they make for a great all-rounder product.  The term “tote bag” refers to a large bag carrying a number of items.  It can be used for a myriad of purposes. It can be filled with books and stationery, making for a great school or work bag. Fill it with a change of clothes, making it a great for an overnight stay.

Another hugely beneficial quality that isn’t to be overlooked is the cost price of the product itself. Even though purchasing them individually may seem problematic or cost worthy, the money cumulatively saved on not needing to purchase plastic bags is astonishing (especially with them being 5p each). This would make the purchasing of plastic almost redundant.

Speaking conclusively, the importance of switching to reusable bags is becoming increasingly prevalent, due to the influx of taxation and the effect on the environment. Making the change may seem dubious at first, however, when its carried out, you can take solace in the fact that you’re doing some moral good for the world.
