What is Origination? – Promo Parrot Blog

Origination. Simply put…

Origination is the umbrella term used for ‘the setup’ associated in branding promotional products with your artwork.

There are many different Branding Methods. Sometimes we can choose which branding method is best for the product, however, usually it’s the other way round, in that the product can only be branded by one specific method.

For example Plastic Pens have to be printed, where many Metal Keyrings have to be engraved.

The Branding Area and Branding Method for each product can be found in the Specification section on each products’ page.

We can brand your artwork onto all the promotional products advertised on our site, and all of the branding methods that we use will have some form of origination.

Screen Printing, Transfer Printing and Pad Printing all use ‘Screens’.
Laser Engraving has ‘Artwork Conversion and Jig Setup’.
Offset Printing uses ‘Printing Plates’.
Digital Printing sometimes has ‘Digital Printer Setup’ .
Embossing has a ‘Tooling Die’.
Embroidery has a ‘Jacquard’ (embroidery disc).

Most, if not all, Origination comes at a cost. Origination costs can be found on your Quote.

How to get cheap Origination?

  1. Simplify your artwork.

With many branding methods (e.g. Screen Printing and Offset Printing) the more colours you print, the more expensive the Origination. So for example, if your artwork is to be printed in 1 colour, Origination will be around £30, however if your artwork is 2 colours, Origination will be double (£60), 3 colour artwork is £90, and so on.

Where applicable, we suggest simplifying your artwork down to 1 colour. This will keep the unit cost of the product and the Origination cost down to the minimum.

  1. Economies of scale… Buy more units.

The more you buy the cheaper the Origination is, as the total cost can be distributed amongst more units.

For example, if the Origination cost is £30 and you buy 100 Pens, the Origination costs 30p per Pen. Whereas, if you buy 1000 Pens the Origination would be a mere 3p per Pen.
